Night Drowning

dare I seek my respite
within the peril of your arms
for there I must submit to dreams
which promise fatal charms
as in this sleep all will is lost
and swims sagacity
with each breath I drown anew
below insentient seas.

CUCK CUCK CUCK CUCK <

there was a little cuckoo
who cucked but couldn’t koo
so went asking all the other birds
just what he could do

the rook lent him a roaring craw
the owl a twit to woo
a goose honked in longing tones
but nobody had the koo

so he left his woodland home
and went to Liverpool
and joined a group of pigeons
who thought his cuck was coooooool

The Plaque

a man of note
lived in this house
in nineteen hundred
and sixteen
he was born
and then he died
but did some stuff
there inbetween.

I had never
heard of him
or knew about
his feats
but still it’s nice
to be informed
he once lived
on this street.

The Smoke of Dreams

I watch the lantern flicker
as death comes to the light
from candle wax the smoke of dreams
fills up the waiting night
for empty is the darkness
until sweet fantasies
replace my waking daylight thoughts
with unfettered reveries.

and rainbow painted tears
trailed across the words
to give them new measure

Rapture

this is the rapture
“la petite mort” say the French
I yearn for such deaths

a never changing truth
each morn its shape is otherwise
and was since in my youth

the last empire fell
atop the broken towers
humanity breathed

The Pedestrian Crossing Peacock

peacock on the kerbside
waiting for the light
suddenly a hundred eyes
shimmered into sight

this dazzled all the drivers
such pedestrian panache
it’s really quite a miracle
he didn’t cause a crash
