she hung plates on the wall
gilded reminders
in crackled china
of things she had seen
and places she’d been
a castle with a foreign name
built above the kitchen door
and a lone wolf in the snow
guarded the pantry
one however
of a young queen
and her prince
she’d carefully remove
every morning
from above the French dresser
not for croissants
but to put her toast upon
so that she’d have company
come breakfast time
