there is a skirmish going on
a border dispute
rather than all out war

how these combatants
came to be enemies
is not clear to me

by the very same passions.

before they pale and fade away
in showers filled with tears
let us explore what we once were

that we may know the parts of us
the fates have had us miss.

which scared the cat
and the dog
was unimpressed
they found it strange
and so I changed
how my head was dressed
that I should live inside the rose
that blooms upon your beauty’s fair
to rest within those velvet petals
safe beyond the thorns of cares
and through the day bask in your perfume
and every evening safely closed
within that flower of love’s virtue
i’d sleep content inside the rose.
light steps her in such gentle ways
mystery that she relays
with emeralds that secrets hold
wisdom of lost ages told
for as time began this goddess she
a dark domestic deity
and still exudes this noble form
as if from jet or marble born
I walked on cold stones
whereupon last steps were trod
by those sent to die
place your lips on me
have them wander winsome ways
in all directions
he is now gone
like the swan
upon which
his memory
of summers past
hung
all is now water
under fenced off bridges
where the living
nor the dead
may walk
reminiscences
of broken white feathers
floating
on ornate ponds
into which
pennies were cast
for wishes unanswered.
