From Another Riverbank (a song for Scott Walker)

from another riverbank
I stand watching her
framed against
the distant clouds

from another riverbank
I stand watching her
singing her song
without words

from another riverbank
I stand watching her
as the rain falls
on the still waters

and the ripples which grow
closer to the other side
roll against the footprints
where she once stood
and whisper my song
too late, too late

while I can only stand
and watch her
from another riverbank

The Mirror Man

I remember an old mirror
sporting Henry Winkler’s face
the legend read
“da Fonz is cool”
for years it’s been misplaced
I wonder what it’s doing now
that Henry Winkler’s old
perhaps it’s in an attic
still young and cool and bold.
As a mirror it really had no use
this painted looking glass
which is likely my hair was such a mess
in that dim and distant past
but like the Fonz, that part of me
is lost and far away
a turned up denim memory
of some old Happy Days.

A Poem Reboot for William Shatner on Birthday 88

The day that William Shatner dies
I won’t know what to do
the grim reaper has to call on him
just like for me and you
but the universe won’t seem the same
once he’s beamed away
but I guess for now I’ll be just fine
as he hasn’t died today.

The world will seem quite odd in fact
something not quite right
and I hope he won’t go quietly
into that last dark night
this undiscovered country
he’ll likely conquer too
but still the day that Shatner dies
I won’t know what to do.
